Google Teacher Academy here I come

#gtauk

I received an email last night notifying me that I had been selected to participate in the Google Teacher Academy UK to be held in London on the 29th July. To say I was very happy is an understatement. I’m really looking forward to it, to meeting all the other educators who have also been selected (shame everyone who entered couldn’t go) and to finding out just what it will all entail.

Now excuse me while I run around the garden again shouting for joy :-)

Collaborative bookmarking is delicious

I was supposed to hold the second ‘Are you up to IcT?’ session in my school today but unfortunately other matters arose. However, I am presenting the video I was going to show. It’s more of a ‘look what you can do with delicious’ rather than a ‘how to’ guide. I hope it’s useful to you.

Why delicious is so attractive

  • one account that everyone can have access to
  • sharing of bookmarks without emailing and written notes
  • access to bookmarks from any computer
  • easy to search and find forgotten bookmarks
  • connections with other users is easy and opens up so many more bookmarks and uses

Sharing is GREAT

This afternoon I began ‘Are you up to IcT?’ staff training in my school and the reaction I received was positive. I demonstrated Sqworl and bit.ly to teachers from Early years to KS2 and they all found the tools useful. So much so that later that afternoon two staff registered with sqworl and created their own sqworl groups which they used with their class.

If you have a tool that you use, if you have a tip that makes your teaching easier, if you are holding onto a special something that others could benefit from then share it.

Are you up to IcT?

As an ICT Coordinator in my school one of my responsibilities is to ensure that the staff, as well as the children, are using technology effectively and are up to date with new practices and tools. To achieve this I have put together a 12 week course that should go some length to addressing this. The course is due to start next week so I’ve got quite a bit to put together before then. But here’s the outline of what I’m proposing to do and over the next few weeks as the course progresses I will update this blog on what occurs, staff feedback on the course, reactions to the training I give and what works/doesn’t work.

This course will not be based on listening to me waffling on. It’s hands on at all times.

I’m also going to record my short sessions for embedding on this blog.

Initial outline

  • Two 10 min demo sessions every Tues+Thurs lunchtimes involving using IWB tools effectively
  • Taking photos with PSP using effect filters and transferring to a PC
  • Using a school delicious account
  • Comic life and why it should be part of your ICT toolkit
  • Web 2.0 tools for class – voicethread and animoto to begin with
  • Recording and playing back a lesson demonstration using a visualiser
  • Netbook tips and using dropbox to store much needed lesson material
  • Windows7 tips and shortcuts
Also one hour after school sessions involving
  • Using our VLE (Fronter) and keeping an online profile of student work
  • Using Ranger Primary to control students in suite and creating lessons with RangerRemote
  • Animation for beginners and make your own blue screen

I hope it can be of some help to any of you wishing to get your own staff up to speed.
