One week with personalised learning

January 22, 2012 in learning

One week has passed with my class using Personal Journey’s, each one containing their very own personalised curriculum for the week ahead. Has the week been successful? Has learning improved? Well, one week is far too short to give detailed answers but I can say that personalising the curriculum for every child in my class has been an inspiring journey for me. I have watched in awe at children working their way through their learning, solving problems in pairs, discussing and thinking, coming up with solutions, offering suggestions and advice to their peers. It has confirmed my belief that if we give learners opportunities to follow a personalised approach they will fly.

Outdoor learning is too good to miss

November 2, 2010 in learning, lesson ideas

Autumn red

Autumn red

Almost two weeks ago I attended the Growing Greener Conference which I blogged about recently. Thanks to that conference I have now been using outside my classroom as my classroom more often. Yes it’s November and it’s cold but that shouldn’t stop you taking your class outdoors for teaching and learning opportunities.

Today we did both our Maths and English outdoors. We went for a ‘magical story walk’ around the vegetable garden where we came across toadstools and fungi growing from the bark covered pathway. This led to the children talking about who might have lived there, what they might have looked like, what their lives were like and when we got back to class, brimming with ideas, everyone started writing their thoughts down. More on those during the week and the descriptions they came up with will appear here soon.

For our data handling activity in Maths, we grabbed some hoops from the PE store and set off to investigate leaf dispersal using the non-scientific ‘Throw a hoop and see what it finds for you’ method of investigation. It worked. The class used laptops as well as books to collect the data as you can see from the photos. Last week we also used leaves for graph work and Carroll diagrams both of which ended up producing a much better outcome than I had planned for.

So it may be November, cold and dark but grab a coat and get outside. It’s definitely a resource worth going out for.

ZooBurst to get new features

June 20, 2010 in learning, raves, Resources in the classroom, tools

ZooBurst

I received the following email from Craig Kapp (creator and owner of ZooBurst). I used the feedback form to let him know how useful I was finding the app, how much my class have enjoyed using it and also to find out if there were any advancements coming our way.

ZooBurst - What's coming

Here are the new features

  • integrated audio
  • better character placement
  • improved management controls
  • class management interface to create class accounts, usernames, passwords etc

ZooBurst is proving to be a hit with many teachers (if hits to my first ZooBurst post are anything to go by) and these new features will only increase it’s potential as an effective classroom tool. Roll on the next version!
