Assessing on the fly

September 30, 2010 in Resources in the classroom, tools

Assessing Pupils Progress (APP) is a great way to keep track of learning in your classroom but if you have ever tried lugging around a full class set of APP grids for reading, writing and maths to keep track then you know it’s a bit cumbersome. There’s also the need of evidence to support your assessments. Some people write this into the children’s books, others photocopy pages of work and cross reference that with the APP grid. I wanted something different, something that would allow me to use my iPhone in class. I had been taking photos of children’s work then attaching those to emails which I would then send to a specially created assessment email I set up in our school Google Apps domain. It works fine but it requires taking the photo, then opening the email then attaching it. Not much I hear you say but then what if an app can do it all in the same instant?

Captio is just that. It’s a very simple app that you can open up, write notes, take a photo and when you’re finished you press send. Done. I tried it today and it was immediately obvious that it will become a very useful tool for APP in class.

Creative writing with Epic Citadel

September 5, 2010 in learning, lesson ideas, Resources in the classroom, tools

Earlier this morning I came across Epic Citadel for the iPad and was blown away by its possible uses for creative writing, boy’s writing in particular. Watch the video to get a taste of what the app is about.

Possible teaching and learning ideas
-to explore the citadel with a small group, engaging them with questions about what they see and hear
-to describe the setting and buildings in the citadel
-to create a character that might have lived in the citadel and what he/she might have done there
-record voice overs to advertise the game
-record voice overs from a citizen’s point of view

If you have any other ideas please leave them in a comment.
For a further in depth look at Epic Citadel Tim Rylands has a great blogpost here
