Posterous – A blog can be for a week

Perfect for Primary classrooms

There are plenty of blogging platforms available that will almost certainly meet the requirements of any blogger. I use wordpress for this website and I am very happy with it but, it just doesn’t do it for Primary school age blogging. I needed a platform that would allow children between the ages of 7 and 9 to blog about their work, quickly and easily. That’s why I chose Posterous.

International Week on Posterous

Posterous allows anyone to post whatever they wish (photos, videos, mp3′s, files and of course text) by email and posterous will take care of the rest. But, set up an account and you can take advantage of so much more. During this week my school is using the theme of ‘International Week’ to promote cultural awareness and our place in the world. I set up internatweek on Posterous as a blogging platform that could be used quickly and easily by the children in my class. The children are using it to blog about their learning, post photos with my iPhone using the brilliant PicPosterous app, record interviews with each other using Easi Speak mics and upload them to the site and embed a Google Earth Map showing where we come from.

Posterous is the perfect blogging platform for Primary classrooms. It’s simple to set up, easy to use and within minutes you are blogging to the world. And it’s perfect for short term projects such as our week long activity.

Blogs don’t have to be for life, they can be for a week. (Thanks to @johnjohston for that)

Nice work Kevin, loving the audio posts and the Google map is great. Google maps is one of the few Google apps I have yet to make use of in my classroom but I have seen some great ideas recently including this one from Bill Lord: http://lordlit.wordpress.com/2010/07/02/world-o… , which is making think I will do something with it next year.

I use Blogger myself and also have my A-Level students use it. However, I am thinking of getting next years AS students to use posterous instead. The ease of use combined with the fact that it allows for auto-upload of audio files without need for external hosting is making me think that it is the way to go. The easier it is for them, the better!

I have signed up to posterous myself for a potential future project. Not sure what it is going to be – perhaps a 365 project; definitely something non-work related.

The good thing about blog services specifically for primary schools is you can easily include widgets like e-safety links, safe search and learning games. Posterous is great for a quick and easy way to adopt a blog so perfect for what you did!

Thanks for the comment James. Posterous is a great platform for both long term and short term blogging requirements. It's ease of use and flexibility are what attracted me to it for teaching and learning. I have used Blogger before with another class but Posterous makes everything so straightforward and instantaneous.
I've been following Bill's ideas with great interest and may just have to use some of them next year myself! And I'll look forward to hearing about how you use Psterous too.
