Practice what you preach

Yes, it’s a classic cliché and one which thefreedictionary describes as

You yourself should do the things you advise other people to do

So that’s why I’m advising you, yes you, to do the same. Practice what you preach.

  • If you show the children in your class photographs then go one step further and show them the photographs you took
  • If you show videos then show them the ones you made too
  • If you show artwork then show them a drawing you did whether it’s from your childhood or a recent sketch
  • If you want them to sing then sing with them or even better, sing solo (even if you can’t)
  • If you show a video of someone demonstrating something, if possible, demonstrate yourself
  • If you want them to dance during a performance then dance yourself, you must be the example
  • If you want the class to create a blog, better show them yours (and if you haven’t got one create one soon)
  • If you show them the latest, greatest online tool then best show them your own use of it otherwise they will smile, go ‘wow’, try it once and do nothing about it thereafter

Be the example if you can and after the initial laughter, the response from your class will be worth every second of embarrassment.

Your're absolutely right on that one. You have to practice what you preach whether you teach kids or teachers. It's more convincing and inspiring.

Thanks for the comment. Today I showed my class a video I created yesterday (Ants at the watering hole from my previous post). The children responded with more enthusiasm as they fired questions at me. 'How did you video it?' 'What did you use to film it?' 'Is it easy or hard?' and my favourite, 'Mr McLaughlin, do you video everything you find interesting?'.
Children respond so much more favourably if you do or show something yourself. Do it and reap the rewards.
